Lesson 8: Learn how to say dates, numbers, and currency correctly.
Key Idea.
English Idea: In Brazil, we use a comma for decimals (R$ 10,50). In English, we use a dot ($10.50). Also, remember: in the US, the month comes first (MM/DD), which can cause big problems with deadlines!

Now you have ChatGPT open, let’s start here.
Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT to start.
“I need to talk about numbers and dates in a meeting.
Please help me with these:
- How do I say ‘$1,500.50’ out loud?
- How do I say the date ’12/05/2026′ if I am talking to an American? (Is it May or December?)
- Give me a list of 5 common business numbers (like 10%, 1/2, 1400, 2026, $5M) and write exactly how I should pronounce them in simple English.”
- Write the numbers in phonetic form to help Brazilians pronounce them correctly.

Practice Prompts.
- The Deadline Check: “I want to confirm a deadline for ‘dia 10 de julho.’ How do I write this in an email so there is no confusion between British and American English?”
- Large Numbers: “I have to say the number 1,250,000 in a presentation. Write it out in words for me and give me a shorter way to say it (using ‘Million’).”
- The “Comma” Trap: “Explain the difference between ‘1.000’ and ‘1,000’ in English. Why is this important for a Brazilian to know when looking at a contract?”
Real-World Task.
Task: Confirm a price and a date with a client.
- What to do: Imagine you are selling a service for R$ 5.000 and the project starts on October 5th.
- Which prompt to use: “I need to send this to a client: ‘The price is 5.000 and we start 05/10.’ Rewrite this using the correct English symbols for money and a clear format for the date so there are no mistakes.”
- Focus: Use the name of the month (e.g., “October 5th”) instead of just numbers to avoid confusion!

A reflection prompt to ask ChatGPT.
“ChatGPT, looking at our conversation, what is the most important thing for me to remember about how Americans write dates versus how Brazilians write them?”
