Module: AI for English.

Lesson 6: The Coffee Break (Small Talk).
Goal: Learn how to start and maintain a casual conversation (Small Talk).

How ChatGPT helps: Use ChatGPT to simulate “social pressure” and practice quick replies.

Key Idea.

AI Idea: “Conversation Partner.” You can ask ChatGPT to be “the person at the coffee machine” who asks you random social questions.

English Idea: In Brazil, we are very warm and might ask personal questions quickly. In English-speaking cultures, small talk usually stays on “safe” topics like the weather, the office, the weekend, or travel.

Log in and Enable voice mode.

Step 1: Sign in.

  • Open the app
  • Log in with the account you created (email, Google, Apple, or Microsoft)

Step 2: Enable voice mode.

  1. Open a chat in the app
  2. Tap the headphones or microphone icon (usually near the text box)
  3. Allow microphone access when asked
  4. Choose a voice (you can change this later)

Now you have ChatGPT open, let’s start here.
Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT to start.

“I want to practice ‘Small Talk.’
We are at a business conference having coffee.

  1. You are a colleague from London.
  2. Start a conversation with me about the event or the weather.
  3. After I reply, correct my English briefly and ask a follow-up question.
  4. Keep your English at an A2 level so I can understand easily.”

Practice Prompts.

  1. The Weekend Question: “In Brazil, we say ‘How was your weekend?’. Give me 3 different ways to answer this: one if it was great, one if it was boring, and one if I stayed home to rest.”
  2. Breaking the Silence: “I am in an elevator with my boss. Give me 2 ‘safe’ sentences I can say to start a conversation in English.”
  3. Asking Back: “How do I ask ‘E você?’ naturally in English? Show me how to use ‘How about you?’ and ‘And yourself?’ in a sentence.”

Real-World Task.

Task: Answer the question “How are you?” with more than just “Fine.”

  • What to do: Imagine a colleague asks “How’s it going?”
  • Which prompt to use: “I want to sound more natural. Instead of just saying ‘Fine, thanks,’ give me 3 phrases to say how my day is going (e.g., ‘Busy but good’). Explain which one sounds most professional.”
  • Focus: Use “Not too bad” or “Keeping busy”—these are very common phrases that Brazilians don’t always use!

A reflection prompt to ask ChatGPT.

“ChatGPT, when I talk about my personal life, do I sound too formal? Tell me one way I can sound more relaxed and friendly in a social work situation.”

Let’s reflect about “Small Talk”.
